Claybrook: A Sustainable Revolution in Luxury Design

,

For interior designers seeking a balance of sustainability, luxury, and innovation, Claybrook stands as a trailblazer in the design world. Executive Vice President Glen Rosser sat down with DesignSpec Co-Founder, Fiona Sanipelli to share the unique story of Claybrook, its evolution, and the brand’s groundbreaking contributions to the industry.

Tell us about your role at Claybrook and what drew you to the company?

Glen: I’m the Executive Vice President for Claybrook, overseeing our North American operations. I was inspired to join Claybrook because of its parent company, Arnhold, which has been in business for over 150 years. That longevity alone speaks volumes.

What intrigued me, was Claybrook’s unique approach. We’re the only company in the world manufacturing natural stone mosaics and upcycling the waste from that process into a stunning range of molded stone baths and vanities. That sustainability-driven innovation was a game-changer for me.

Could you share more about how the company transitioned from mosaics to fixtures?

Glen: Claybrook’s evolution was deeply rooted in Arnhold’s values—agility, respect, and innovation. For decades, we supplied luxury mosaics to high-end retailers globally. While we excelled as an OEM manufacturer, we weren’t building our own name.

Simultaneously, we were grappling with waste. Marble dust from mosaic manufacturing was being trucked out of the factory at a high cost. Our team realized this waste presented an opportunity. With some innovative thinking, we developed a system to recycle this marble dust into raw material for molded stone baths and vanities. We call it, MarbleForm™ and it is a sustainable and unique material that has reimagined the possibilities of stonecraft. This closed-loop process became the foundation of our fixtures line.

“Our vision was to close the loop and create a world-class brand of luxury and sustainable fixtures.”

Your designs range from timeless elegance to bold, youthful statements. How do you approach creating new collections?

Glen: One word—transitional. Our style lives at the intersection of modern and traditional design. Every piece reflects our commitment to craftsmanship; our molds are hand-finished, and we draw inspiration from both European artistry and the bathing mindset of Asia-Pacific.

We also value collaboration. While we work with a talented in-house team, we frequently partner with top designers globally, especially in London, New York, Toronto, and Hong Kong. What sets us apart is our ability to customize. Designers come to us with sketches or even a paint swatch, and we bring their vision to life, creating bespoke pieces that are truly unique.

“Our style lives at the intersection of modern and traditional design—it’s about blending the best of both worlds.”

What role does sustainability play in your design process?

Glen: Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Our molded stone products, crafted from recycled marble dust, are tactile, warm to the touch, and environmentally responsible. Additionally, we’ve implemented a filtration system that recycles water across our factory floor, reducing waste even further.

Our products are also designed with comfort and ergonomics in mind. Take our Imbue Bath, for example—it’s compact yet deep, inspired by the shape of a teacup. It’s a piece of art that delivers on both aesthetics and functionality.

“Sustainability isn’t just a trend for us—it’s a core value.”

Your tubs are truly sculptural, and they seem to be a focal point in many spaces. Who is your primary market—hospitality, commercial, or residential?

Glen: We started in hospitality, partnering with luxury brands like Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental, and Four Seasons. Expanding into North America was both exciting and humbling. We’ve since moved into residential markets, showcasing our products in over 40 showrooms across the U.S., in places like Park City, Jackson Hole, and Santa Monica.

Commercial applications remain a key part of our business too. From Louis Vuitton retail spaces to timeless carved stone pieces for Chicago’s Aster Hall designed by AvroKo, our versatility allows us to work across diverse projects.

“We’ve partnered with luxury brands like Rosewood and Four Seasons—and expanded into residential markets across the U.S.”

What is a memorable project or moment from your time at Claybrook?

Glen: One that stands out is a boutique Shay Hotel project in Culver City, , where we had the pleasure of collaborating with Christian Schulz and his team at Studio Collective. It was a challenging project due to budget constraints, but our ability to customize proved invaluable. We provided vanities and tubs that matched the aesthetic perfectly.

Another memorable moment was with a restaurant at the same property. The vanities had developed soap residue over time, and the cleaning staff struggled to restore them. I happened to visit the property, pulled out a magic eraser, and within seconds the surface looked brand new. It was a simple fix, but seeing the joy it brought was incredibly rewarding.

“Whether it’s restoring a product’s beauty or creating a one-of-a-kind piece, the little moments make the work rewarding.”

Looking ahead, what’s next for Claybrook?

Glen: We’re exploring new materials, including integrating metal with stone for innovative designs. One exciting project is the renovation of the iconic Hutton Hotel in Nashville, where we’ve provided seamless vanity tops with internal overflows and custom finishes.

Our focus remains on pushing boundaries while staying true to our values of sustainability and luxury. Whether it’s creating tubs for the Aman in Bhutan, where we had the privilege of collaborating with Kerry Hill Architects to mirror the natural environment or working with top designers to craft bespoke collections, we’re always looking for ways to elevate our craft.

“Our focus remains on pushing boundaries while staying true to our values of sustainability and luxury.”

It’s clear that Claybrook is more than just a brand—it’s a movement. Any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

Glen: At Claybrook, we’re not just creating products; we’re crafting experiences. Whether it’s a sculptural tub that becomes the centerpiece of a bathroom or a custom vanity that perfectly complements its surroundings, we strive to make every piece meaningful.

To designers, I’d say this: Don’t hesitate to challenge us. Bring us your vision, no matter how ambitious—we’re here to make it a reality.
