The Pool Deck at Mondrian: Where Art, Architecture, and Experience Converge

As we continue following the transformation of the Mondrian Hallandale Beach, in collaboration with the visionary design team at ROW01, we’re exploring the layers that are redefining this commercial building conversion as a living art space.

At DesignSpec, we’ve been following the journey behind the conversion of this 27-story property, highlighting the vision, the collaboration, and the coordination required to bring it to life. Each reveal uncovers another dimension of the project’s art-forward philosophy.

This chapter takes us outdoors.

At the Mondrian Hallandale Beach, the transformation into a living art space extends beyond interiors. It reaches outward, into the open air where the pool deck becomes another immersive layer of the building’s creative identity. This isn’t just simply a place to lounge, it’s a designed experience.

As part of the larger re imagination of the 27-story landmark, the pool deck reflects the same philosophy guiding the entire project: art is embedded within the architecture, not applied to it.

Designed as an Outdoor Gallery

The pool deck was designed by ROW01 in partnership with Galera Collective, bringing together architectural intention and cultural expression in one cohesive environment.

The space balances sculptural forms, curated lounge zones, and refined material selections, creating a setting that feels both elevated and immersive. Sightlines, scale, and spatial rhythm were carefully considered so that movement through the deck feels intentional and dynamic.

Anchoring the experience is a bold mural created by internationally recognized street artists Ktano and Chuave, two of the most prolific muralists in the world. Their large-scale work transforms the backdrop into a defining visual statement, reinforcing the Mondrian’s identity as a living art space.

A Cultural Layer: Galera Collective + the Artists Behind the Mural

A key partner in shaping the creative energy of the pool deck is Galera Collective, a multidisciplinary creative studio that bridges art, architecture, and spatial storytelling. Their expertise lies in curating cultural and artistic collaborations that strengthen spaces and deepens community engagement, through various forms of art. Central to this collaboration is the mural work of Chuave and Ktano, two artists whose voices bring global perspective, cultural depth, and expressive energy to the Mondrian’s outdoor canvas.

Chuave is an urban artist originally from Córdoba, Argentina, now based in Miami. Coming from a long lineage of painters and immersed in urban culture from a young age, his murals transform public surfaces into narratives about emotion, connection, and community. Through expressive character work and layered symbolism, his pieces explore shared human experience while creating visual dialogue with the surrounding environment. Follow him on IG 👉 @chauveo

Ktano, originally from Cali, Colombia and now active in South Florida, is a dynamic muralist, graffiti artist, and painter whose work channels the raw energy of urban culture into bold contemporary compositions. Known for his large-scale murals and immersive street pieces, he has developed a distinct visual language that bridges the authenticity of graffiti with the refinement of fine art. Their mural isn’t just background, it’s a cultural statement and a visual anchor that reinforces the Mondrian’s identity as a living art environment.

Art as Environment

At the Mondrian, every environment contributes to a larger narrative. The pool area exemplifies this philosophy: color, texture, shade structures, hardscape materials, furnishings, and landscape elements work together to create depth and visual energy.

Rather than isolating art within frames or installations, the design integrates it into the built environment itself. Residents and guests don’t simply observe the artwork, they inhabit it.

This layering of art and architecture transforms the amenity into something experiential. Where landscape design, exterior finishes, and architectural details all contribute to a unified story.

Executing a Complex Outdoor Vision

Designing an exterior environment at this scale introduces unique challenges. Outdoor furniture, shade structures, pavers, tile, lighting, plantings, irrigation systems, drainage, and performance materials must all be carefully selected and coordinated, especially in a coastal climate.

Exterior projects demand attention to durability, environmental exposure, code requirements, and long-term maintenance, all while maintaining design integrity.

This is where DesignSpec plays a critical role.

Our commercial-grade specification platform isn’t limited to interiors. It supports outdoor environments, landscape design, and exterior architectural elements by centralizing product data, finish schedules, technical documentation, and approvals in one place.

Whether teams are specifying:

  • Exterior furniture and shade systems

  • Hardscape materials and specialty tile

  • Landscape lighting and site elements

  • Planters, planting schedules, and irrigation components

  • Performance-rated finishes for coastal environments

DesignSpec ensures clarity across disciplines and stakeholders.

Outdoor spaces often involve architects, landscape designers, interior designers, procurement teams, and contractors, all working simultaneously. By streamlining documentation and communication, DesignSpec helps protect design intent while reducing costly misalignment.

When a space is defined by precision and intention, especially one exposed to the elements, execution matters even more.

DesignSpec helps protect that intention.

Another Layer of the Living Art Space

As the Mondrian continues to evolve, the pool deck represents more than an amenity. It reinforces the larger vision of the building as a living art environment, where every square foot — indoors and out — contributes to a cohesive creative identity.

And as more layers are revealed, we’ll continue following the journey, highlighting how design ambition and structured coordination come together to bring visionary spaces to life.
